If the beach is the main reason you are coming to San Diego then staying at the beach is probably a priority as well. There are a number of hotels spread around Mission Bay as well. Places like the Catamaran, the Bahia, the Hilton, Paradise Point and the Dana. They aren't on the ocean but they do front on water and often cater to families. Staying right on the beach is going to be the most expensive, in places like La Jolla, even more so. But there are still plenty of other options. There are a number of places within easy walking distance of the water and they tend to be a little cheaper. So be sure to check around.
Another option near the beach are rentals. They are usually rent by the week, so if you are only here for a day or two that's not an option. But if it's you and your family weekly rentals can save you some money. They come fully furnished and with kitchen utensils. You can save some money by making your own meals and keep the kids happy. If you do decide to stay at a beachfront hotel make sure you ask about where you room is. You don't want to arrive and expect an ocean view only to find yourself in a room in the back looking at the parking lot.
Downtown has tons of hotels. All the major chains are located there and there are a number of smaller hotels all over downtown. Downtown of course has the nightlife, and if the reason for your visit is business or a convention, then downtown is probably the place you want to be.
Mission Valley and Old Town is another area with a concentration of hotels. Some smaller conventions are held in a couple of the larger facilities there as well. The room prices tend to be a little lower than downtown and the beaches. If you plan to do a lot of driving anyway then Mission Valley and Old Town might work for you.
Once you've decided where to stay making a reservation is easy. With any of the national chains, you can call their 800 numbers. Most of the aggregators, such as Orbitz and Priceline also can give you deals at many of the hotels. But understand many of the hotels in San Diego, especially at the beaches, are small and not part of a chain and don't deal with the aggregators. You'll want to call them direct. Call any hotel in San Diego has other advantages as well. very often that's the way to get a good deal. Just remember that during the summer months and major conventions, such as Comic-Con, the hotels are going to be packed. Calling the hotel directly might be the only way you can get a room.
Lastly, don't be afraid to ask about discounts. Most hotels offer deals to auto club members or members of certain retirement groups. Military families also often get a break in San Diego. So ask.By Sabastian Dauphinee
